My Autobiography as DJ Leo “The Lion”
Ladies & Gentlemen Please Let Me Introduce Myself!!
My name is Leo Brown, but known in the industry as DJ Leo “The Lion.” I started playing music back in the early ‘90s as DJ Leo “The Lion,” but my passion for music started as a child. My desire to be a radio DJ started when I would hear Frankie Crocker on 107.5 WBLS, Kool DJ Red Alert on 98.7 KISS FM, and Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack also on 107.5 WBLS when I was in high school. I decided, after high school, to pursue my dream of a radio DJ. After some years of military duties in the United States Navy and going to school, I finally got behind the microphone in college at City College of San Francisco. There I learned how to produce my own shows. From college I landed several internships at major radio trade magazines like The Gavin Report and CMJ Marathon where I interacted with radio station DJ’s and retail stores and wrote articles and record reviews. After my internships, I landed a Record promotions job where I promoted artist on different major & independent labels. It kept me around Radio DJ’s for several years. After these years in expanding my music industry experience, I took a break for at least 12 years until I went back to college at Foothill College where I retrained behind the board and microphone. I felt I was getting closer to my journey of becoming a radio DJ. Even though, my journey took longer than I wanted it to it allowed me to learn how to be patient and not rush because all opportunities will come in God’s time.
So one day I ran into an old friend who has a station in NY. His station was streamed through the internet. This would give me the freedom to play whatever music I wanted and create and engaging show. My friend asked if I would like my own platform to create my own show and I accepted that opportunity that day. Lion’s Den Show and Lion’s Den Gospel Show was born on FONYE Radio.
The Lion’s Den Show first came on the air in the Spring of 2014 on FONYE Radio that is based in the Bronx, NY. Adam Smith aka Kool DJ AD, the owner of FONYE Radio internet station was the friend who I ran to and allowed me to start playing secular music on his platform with the Lion’s Den Show. My gospel show, “Lion’s Den Gospel Show” followed soon after.
My Lion’s Den Show is a two hour show where I play R&B, Freestyle, Hip-Hop and other forms of music. On my Lion’s Den Gospel Show is a three hour show where I play Gospel, Praise & Worship and Christian Hip-Hop and also include words of inspiration.
On the Lion’s Den Show and on the Lion’s Den Gospel I do play the popular music, but my focus is to give a platform for independent artists because I feel they need to be heard. There is so much good music out there hidden that it needs to be played. Outside of playing great music on both of my shows, I also feature artists, authors, business owners, and entrepreneurs on my show where I provide a platform to speak about dreams, goals, and upcoming events.
The Lion’s Den Gospel Show has been recognized as one of the finest shows in northern California and in the nation. The show has been nominated at the NCEM Award Show in Sacramento, CA for Best Internet Radio Show. In 2017 at The Spin Awards in Atlanta, GA, I was nominated for four awards and won the award for Best Late Show. In 2018 again at The Spin Awards, I was nominated for six awards and won a special award called Grinder of The Year.
Now my full focus will be to launch my own gospel internet radio station, Beacon of Light Gospel Radio. On Beacon of Light we will provide a platform for artists and talk show hosts on themes such as family, marriage, health & wellness, business, words of inspiration, as well as Christian music on various genres, hip-hop, gospel, Praise & Worship, etc. Once Beacon of Light Gospel Radio is launched and running, my next focus will be to create a secular internet radio station. The legacy built for Lion’s Den Gospel Show and the secular internet radio station will continue by providing more access and opportunities for upcoming artists as well as the veterans in both industries.
